Natalia Rodrigues: Environmental Officer at Celebrity Cruises
In this space dedicated to uncovering the important roles played by women in various positions within the cruise industry, there is undoubtedly a particular curiosity about those who work on board.
It is undeniable that, while many significant positions work “behind the scenes” to make the wonderful cruise experience possible, the figures who accompany us on board during our journeys hold a particular charm. However, they also raise some questions and invite us to ask a series of questions that are not always easy to answer. We wanted to address some of these to Natalia Rodrigues, currently an Environmental Officer on board Celebrity Cruises, believing that these are questions many of us often ask. But also to highlight the daily work that is done on board ships, by both women and men, with difficulty and sacrifices to create an atmosphere of serenity and discovery in all the seas of the world.
Natalia, first of all, thank you for your willingness to tell us a little about your working life and for the time you are giving us while on board, as it is notoriously very precious when sailing. Let’s start from the beginning, tell us what drew you to the sea, where you conducted your studies, and what sparked your passion.
It was quite an exciting journey! I was drawn to the sea due to my passion for traveling and exploring the world. I pursued my education in maritime and environmental fields, specializing in MARPOL (Marine Pollution) through Lloyd’s Maritime Academy in the UK. Additionally, I hold a master’s degree in Environment & Sustainability from FGV Fundacao Getulio Vargas and a bachelor’s degree in business management from Brazil. My educational background reflects my commitment to understanding and addressing environmental issues in the maritime industry, aligning with passion for sustainability and global exploration. My experiences and qualifications have likely equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of both the operational and environmental aspects of working at sea.
What was your first experience, and in what role, on board a passenger ship? After your first embarkation, did you immediately realize that this was the job you wanted to pursue? What were the things that surprised you?
My journey into the maritime industry began in 2012, fresh out of completing my bachelor’s degree. My initial role was as a Cabin Steward onboard a cruise ship. At that time, I didn’t have proficient English skills, but my primary goal was to immerse myself in the onboard life and gain firsthand experience. This role provided me with valuable insights into hard work, exploring new places, interacting with diverse cultures, and even learning new languages. After her first 9-month contract, I had already picked up Spanish and became highly motivated to improve my English skills. This experience sparked my realization that combining my passion for travel with a fulfilling career at sea was the perfect fit for my ambitions. My initial stint onboard not only confirmed my interest in the maritime industry but also fueled my determination to advance and take on new challenges.
What likely surprised me during this time were the daily realities of shipboard life—such as the rigorous schedules, the diversity of the crew and passengers, the opportunities for personal growth through language acquisition, and the sheer variety of experiences that come with traveling to different ports of call around the world. These elements likely contributed to my decision to pursue a long-term career.
And after that? How many and which ships or companies have you worked with, and how has your career developed?
My career at sea has been quite dynamic and transformative, spanning various roles across 6 companies and 12 ships over 12 years. Here’s a breakdown of my journey:
– Early Career: Started as a Cabin Stewardess, gaining initial experience in onboard operations and customer service.
– Progression: Moved on to roles such as Bar Waitress, Secretary, and Guest Relations Officer, each contributing to my skills in hospitality, administration, and guest relations.
– Career Reflection During Pandemic: The pandemic provided me a period of reflection, during which I realized the potential for career growth through further education. I decided to pursue a master’s degree and specialized in MARPOL (Marine Pollution), aligning my studies with environmental interests.
– Transition to Environmental Officer: With determination and dedication, I completed my master’s degree remotely within two years, leveraging newfound qualifications to transition into the role of Environmental Officer.
– Career Philosophy: Throughout journey, I emphasize the importance of passion, persistence, consistency, and discipline in achieving my career goals. I saw that how continuous learning and adaptation can lead to significant career advancements, even in challenging times like the pandemic.
– Future Outlook: I had anticipated that the maritime industry would need skilled professionals in various roles as it recovers from the pandemic and resumes normal operations, due to my diverse experience and specialized education position for continued success and leadership in her field.
I believe my story underscores the potential for growth and advancement in the maritime industry through dedication and strategic career planning. My journey from entry-level positions to a specialized role as an Environmental Officer highlights the opportunities available to those who are willing to pursue their passions and invest in continuous learning.

How are your embarkations structured? How many weeks do you spend on board and how many at home? Where do you usually live and what do you love to do when you return home?
My schedule provides a balanced blend of work and personal time, structured as 3 months on board followed by 3 months off for vacation. After 3-month stint on board, I enjoy a well-deserved 3-month vacation period. This extended break allows me ample time to rest, recharge, and pursue personal interests. I have living in Athens, Greece, for the past 5 years. Athens likely serves as a convenient base due to its proximity to major Mediterranean ports frequently visited by cruise ships. And when I return home to Athens, I enjoy a variety of activities: Chasing Sunsets: Appreciating natural beauty and serenity. Connecting with Nature: Likely exploring parks, gardens, or nearby nature spots. Visiting Family in Brazil: Spending quality time with loved ones. Brunch with Friends: Socializing and catching up over meals. Beach Trips: Enjoying the coastal environment, possibly engaging in water activities. Traveling: Exploring new destinations whenever possible, reflecting my passion for adventure and discovery.
My schedule and lifestyle illustrate a well-rounded approach to balancing my career at sea with meaningful personal time. My time off allows me to indulge in my interests, maintain connections with loved ones, and recharge before my next embarkation.
Can you briefly describe a typical day for you when you are on board? I think every passenger is curious to discover the work shifts, the possibilities for rest, and how you manage your free time in a very confined environment. Additionally, your role on board is becoming increasingly important as ships trend towards being greener and more respectful of the environment and the communities affected by the industry.
My typical day on board as an Environmental Officer with Celebrity Cruises involves a variety of responsibilities and tasks, reflecting a crucial role in ensuring environmental compliance and sustainability. Here’s a breakdown of her day:
– Early Morning Routine (around 06:00 AM): Check records books for discharges, incinerators, and oil transfers and Meet with the Captain and Chief Engineer to collect their signatures on the record book, ensuring compliance before arrival at ports.
– Morning Tasks: Read and respond to emails, completes daily paperwork related to environmental operations and Conduct environmental training sessions for crew members, collaborates with the Safety Officer on drills to ensure readiness.
– Environmental Inspections and Sampling: Conduct tours of the Recycling Center for guests, educate on environmental equipment, operations and monitoring and Collects water samples to monitor water quality and prevent outbreaks, verify the quality of treated wastewater.
– Waste Disposal Management: Plans and monitors waste disposal activities, ensuring compliance with segregation and environmental regulations and standards.
– Voyage Planning: Cooperate with the Navigation Officer to review environmental regulations for voyage planning, ensuring environmental operations are integrated into the ship’s itinerary.
– Evening Activities: Participate in guest events and socialize with passengers, enhancing awareness and engagement in environmental initiatives and Oversee the maintenance of the open deck lawn and floating tree, managed by a small team under my supervision.
– Reporting and Leadership: Reports directly to the Captain, providing updates on environmental compliance and initiatives.
My day showcases a structured routine that balances administrative tasks, inspections, training, and proactive environmental stewardship. My role not only involves operational oversight but also includes educational outreach and ensuring that the ship meets and exceeds environmental standards set by regulatory bodies. My interactions with both crew and guests underscore my commitment to raising awareness and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility within the cruise industry.
Fortunately, we are seeing an evolution in the presence of female figures in officer roles, in addition to the hotel area, of course. Can you tell us if, during your experiences, you encountered any difficulties or prejudices toward women in these positions? I refer to both your training phase and the subsequent one, after your first embarkations.
There has been a noticeable evolution in recent years with increasing efforts towards gender equality and diversity in the workplace. Many companies are actively working to create inclusive environments and opportunities for women to excel in all roles, including leadership positions in hospitality and maritime sectors. It’s important to acknowledge that while progress has been made, there is still work to be done to ensure that women in these roles are treated equitably and have the same opportunities for success as their male counterparts. At begining of course it was very challenging to adapt and be included in the major men environmental however, working harder, always being professional, strong and dynamic, I gained the trust of the male-dominated environment and of course adding a bit of feminine energy always helps to create a balance. Everything is a process of adapting, and the time and experience is the key of success.
