How to Get to Port Louis

Costa Cruises offers many options to reach Mauritius and Port Louis and provides varied itineraries through the Indian Ocean. MSC Cruises also offers multiple cruise options, though the itineraries are less varied.

Oceania Cruises and Azamara Cruises offer a more comfortable way to explore this island, with quality entertainment on board, luxurious accommodations and impeccable service.

Le Caudan Waterfront

Le Caudan Waterfront is a modern shopping and entertainment complex on the waterfront in Port Louis that features a wide array of shops where you can browse the various fruits, spices and foods. The Caudan Waterfront also features multiple restaurants with local and international dishes, a casino, movie theatres, a history museum, the Blue Penny and a craft market with local, artisanal trinkets. While you peruse the markets, you can even take a stroll down the marina, which offers a marvellous view and hosts regular, live, street entertainment.

Blue Penny

Modern and dynamic in its conception, the Blue Penny Museum houses an extensive heritage collection that exhibits the country of Mauritius and the surrounding region. The museum displays artefacts that recount the history of the island, from the first explorer to set foot on the land to the successive European, African and Asian settlers. At the Blue Penny Museum, numerous local legends find a place to be told, and you’ll marvel at the amazing stories and myths.

Pamplemousses Botanical Garden

The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden is one of the oldest Botanical Garden in the southern hemisphere and dates back to 1736. Some of the plant species introduced during this historical period are still present in the Spice Corner of the Garden.

The Garden also has an animal corner, a unique concept for a botanical garden, where visitors can spot deer, tortoises and other creatures. The animal corner boasts several bird species, including parrots, ducks and the Madagascar Moorhen. Within the ponds, several aquatic animals, such as turtles, fish and eels, can be observed swimming through the water. Bats, which are Mauritius’s only endemic mammal, can also be spotted hanging from the treetops during the day.

Mauritius is a melting pot of cultures, and the best way to experience this local culture is through the local food.

Green Thumb

Le Pouce (The Thumb) is one of the most well-known mountains in Mauritius. The peak provides splendid views of Port Louis, the Moka range and, thanks to the central location of the mountain, a panoramic view of the entire island. Venture Mauritius offers a guided hike to the top of the mountain, which is accessible even to beginners and provides commentary about the mountain and local history.

On your visit through the city, stop by the Jummah Mosque, a majestic landmark with a beautiful entrance and even more beautiful architectural details. You could also check out another important landmark, the Saint Louis Cathedral. The Cathedral was built and rebuilt after many accidents tore it down – a monument to human’s resilience.
