Monte Palace Madeira: A paradise for the senses
Funchal, the capital of Madeira, is known for its subtropical beauty – and few places embody this splendor better than the Monte Palace Madeira. This impressive garden complex is far more than just a botanical garden – it is a blend of natural diversity, artistic richness and historical heritage. This half-day excursion is recommended for cruise passengers looking for a special experience.
Fantastic views from above
The Monte Palace Madeira is located around 560 meters above sea level in the Monte district, nestled in the lush slopes above Funchal. To get there, you have the choice of taking the cable car with its magnificent panoramic views or an adventurous ride by cab or public bus along narrow, steep and winding roads. Both have their charm. The top station of the comfortable cable car leads directly up to the entrance of the Monte Palace Madeira and also offers a magnificent view of the terraced fields of Madeira and the lively city below, while your cruise ship lies majestically in the harbor.
Several vantage points in the garden invite you to enjoy this view to the full. From up here, the ships in the harbor appear like miniatures and the expanse of the Atlantic stretches to the horizon – the perfect place for a souvenir photo.

A botanical jewel
Covering over 70,000 square meters, the Monte Palace Madeira is home to an impressive variety of plants from all over the world. Thanks to Madeira’s mild climate, species from different continents thrive here: from exotic tree species to colorful flowers. In addition to palm ferns from South Africa, you can admire a variety of tropical trees such as sequoias from America and acacias from Australia. The colors and fragrances of colorful orchids, giant hydrangeas, tropical lilies and strelitzias will not only captivate flower lovers. The local star among the plants, the “Laurissilva” (laurel forest), which was declared a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site in 2020, can also be admired.
The oriental gardens in Japanese and Chinese style take you to another world. Here you will find harmonious retreats with traditional pagodas, Buddha statues, red bridges and even koi ponds. Ideal for enjoying a moment of peace. The wildlife also has surprises in store: Pink flamingos stroll around on graceful legs and Indian peacocks spread their feathers. Around the central lake, cozy benches invite you to linger while majestic swans make their rounds.

History, art & crystals
The winding paths through the botanical garden bring you closer to history in a very special way: “azulejos”. These centuries-old, often hand-painted tiles, which are artfully integrated into paths and walls, tell stories from different eras: Christian scenes, but also political and historical events. The complex resembles an open-air museum that presents art in a variety of ways, be it through sculptures or cleverly integrated architectural elements. There is a new surprise to discover around every corner of the Monte Palace Madeira.
The main building also houses a three-storey museum. Modern contemporary art is exhibited here, while the world of crystals, minerals and gemstones is presented in the basement. The shape, color and brilliance of these minerals have fascinated people since ancient times. Hundreds of exhibits from different countries reveal the secrets and beauty of our Mother Earth.

An excursion for all the senses
If you want to experience local music, you should be there in good time. Every day at 12.30 pm, musicians from the region, often with local folklore, expand the range of performances. Food and drink are also provided. The Greenhouse in the main building or the Bluehouse Café at one of the viewpoints offer small dishes, sweets and refreshments. At the southern end of the park, a small hut invites you to try Madeira’s traditional drink: The Poncha Bar serves the local sugar cane schnapps with honey and orange or lemon, while the world-famous basket toboggans carrying tourists’ whizz down the adjacent road. Not only a worthwhile photo opportunity, but also an ideal motivation to sit in the basket sledge yourself at the end of the tour. Before doing so, however, we recommend a visit to the nearby pilgrimage church of Nossa Senhora do Monte. It not only houses the tomb of the last king of Austria-Hungary, Charles I, but also offers a magnificent panoramic view over Madeira.
Whether you are admiring the botanical diversity, discovering art and history or simply enjoying the magnificent view over the city and the sea, the Monte Palace Madeira is an unforgettable destination. This half-day excursion is a perfect mix of nature, culture and relaxation for cruise guests visiting Funchal.
