Nuevo Berlin: A Small but Rich Town in Uruguay

Nuevo Berlin is a small town situated on the banks of the Uruguay River in the Rio Negro region, 42 km from Fray Bentos. It is rich in history, culture, and nature.

The town serves as one of the gateways to the protected area “Parque Nacional Esteros de Farrapos e Islas del Río Uruguay,” a system of riverine wetlands, islands, and islets that are permanently and/or temporarily flooded following the flooding of the Uruguay River. This natural paradise offers unique views of a landscape that hosts a wide variety of vegetation known for its high degree of naturalness, diverse environments, and functions in flood prevention and control, protection of the Uruguay River banks, and as a breeding site for priority conservation species and those of commercial value. However, the town has several points of interest, from the beaches of El Sauzal and Santa Rosa to the picturesque pier.

The La Yeguada trail is particularly interesting for nature lovers, featuring an archaeological site that provides insight into the rich past of the area. The ruins of the Saladero are also worth visiting, as they tell the story of a former manufacturing establishment dedicated to producing salted and dried meat.

While strolling through Nuevo Berlin, a stop at the old Garbarino emporium is a must to discover the charm of the old general store, which for many years was the leading retailer of household appliances and electronic items in the country. The picturesque pier of Nuevo Berlin offers a chance to admire the view of the Uruguay River from the pier or venture out to explore some of the surrounding river islands. For those who prefer to relax, the picturesque beaches of El Sauzal and Santa Rosa are ideal, providing an opportunity to unwind and enjoy the landscape along the Uruguay River.

If you are lucky during your visit to Nuevo Berlin, you might come across the folk music and song festival, Festival Desde la Costa. Each year in January, hundreds of residents and tourists gather to enjoy this event, which takes place on an open-air stage located on the riverbanks and hosts prominent national artists.

As for culinary experiences, Nuevo Berlin offers the chance to taste honey, which is particularly renowned in the area. Popular dining locations include the Municipal Parador with its privileged view of the Uruguay River and Casa Meira, an excellent gastronomic proposal to savor typical Uruguayan dishes.
