Uruguay: The Famous Mate and Gastronomy

Uruguay is a country deeply connected to nature, boasting a wide variety of landscapes and numerous tourist attractions. However, one distinctive feature that makes this destination unique is undoubtedly its gastronomy.

When visiting any city in Uruguay, it is impossible not to hear about mate, as it represents an irreplaceable beverage for Uruguayans and serves as a symbol of welcome for those visiting this beautiful land.

Mate is a drink made from the infusion of “yerba mate” (dried and ground leaves of Illex paraguayensis) and is one of the most typical and traditional cultural elements of Uruguayan society. The custom of using a thermos and abandoning the kettle to prepare the infusion is an Uruguayan initiative that allows mate to be made outside the home, making it possible to enjoy it in various public spaces—an aspect that characterizes one of the most typical and everyday images of society. The yerba mate contains highly nutritious substances, such as vitamin A. The particular composition of yerba mate, especially its caffeine content, makes the infusion a very stimulating and tonic drink; it also acts as a diuretic and vasodilator.

As you wander through the beautiful cities of Uruguay, it is quite common to encounter Uruguayans accompanied by their thermoses and mate, inseparable companions regardless of the time of year. But exactly why are Uruguayans so attached to mate, and what does it represent?

Depending on the place, the moment, or the company, mate takes on different meanings. It can be a food, or simply a beverage to sip during leisure time. It brings together students, groups of friends, family members, and coworkers, making it an element of communion and a symbol of hospitality for those welcomed with a “calentito mate” at the doorstep. Mate is generally consumed communally, using the same container and bombilla, which is passed from one person to another. This practice distinctly sets it apart from how other infusions, such as tea or coffee, are shared.

The origin of this drink dates back to the pre-Hispanic era of Guarani culture, but starting in the 17th century, while the custom of drinking tea was becoming established in Europe, the habit of drinking mate spread in South America, specifically in Uruguay. Over the years, it has secured its place in the cities, and today, drinking mate is a common practice throughout Uruguay, as well as in Argentina, Paraguay, and southern Brazil.

Beyond mate, another characteristic element of Uruguayan gastronomy is the asado, one of the most important dishes in the Uruguayan diet, best enjoyed with a glass of Tannat wine. It consists of various types of meat grilled on a “parrilla,” a device made of iron used for this purpose. The secret of this ancient cooking method is that it allows the juices of the food to concentrate, thereby preserving their characteristic flavors.

Uruguayan wines are ideal for accompanying these exquisite meats. Among those with significant international positioning, the wines made from the Tannat grape stand out, described as intense, powerful, serious, and austere. This grape, originally from southwestern France, was introduced in the mid-19th century, and its cultivation was so successful that Uruguay became the world’s largest producer of this variety.

Furthermore, the dairy industry is very well developed in the country, producing high-quality products, among which a precious delicacy stands out: dulce de leche. This sweet treat, highly appreciated by both children and adults, is used in a wide variety of desserts and other delicious delicacies, making it the undisputed star of Uruguayan pastry. What makes this sweet unique in the world, and quite different from similar products in other countries, is its exquisite flavor, creamy texture, brightness, and characteristic color.

In conclusion, when visiting Uruguay, in addition to discovering its history, admiring nature, and experiencing vibrant cities, it is essential to immerse yourself in Uruguayan culture by tasting the gastronomy of this destination, which offers options for all tastes, from beverages to delicious dishes, both savory and sweet!
