MedCruise: The Development of Digital Communication

MedCruise, the largest Association of Cruise Ports whose mission is to promote the cruise industry in the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Adriatic Sea, Red Sea, and Eastern Atlantic, has introduced several initiatives and services during its latest term, now supported by technological innovations on its digital platforms.

MedCruise, representing 153 ports from 22 countries across 3 different continents and 53 Associate Members, has decided to invest in digital communication following internal surveys and studies conducted by various working groups within the association. This investment includes the development of new infographics, statistical reports, interactive maps, and a section dedicated to career opportunities. The improvements to the website introduce new features aimed at enhancing the user experience and ensuring access to the most up-to-date information for the cruise industry from its members, creating greater visibility for all MedCruise ports and associate members. Additionally, starting from June 2024, the association will open a profile on ‘Threads’ to reach even more stakeholders through broader social media communication.

Among the various innovations introduced, one of the most significant is the geolocation of each member, a fundamental change in terms of precision and accuracy. This also enables the creation of detailed and informative maps and infographics that reflect data and information from various surveys, new initiatives, or activities created during this term.

From now on, the cruise industry will have detailed information on facilities and crew services available at ports. Furthermore, the sustainability and environment survey conducted by board members Valeria Mangiarotti and Jamil Ouazzani will be presented in a map format, with data available on the MedCruise website featuring customizable filters, offering users reliable information and facilitating informed decision-making.

The MedCruise website will become more interactive, allowing members to manage and update their profiles directly, ensuring the accuracy of the information presented and promoting their engagement within the MedCruise community. Additionally, a new section on the website will be dedicated to career opportunities from cruise companies as well as on the port side, including anyone who wants to become part of the vibrant cruise industry.

MedCruise has prioritized data management to become one of the reliable sources of data, and in collaboration with the company SaMMYacht, has actively worked on a project to create a digital platform to automate the reporting, modeling, and visualization of cruise traffic data through the MedCruise port network on an annual basis. This platform will incorporate dynamic charts and historical data collected over the last 10 years, allowing members to compare available recorded data.

Following a 47% increase in associate members, MedCruise has also created a categorization system that includes four different categories of associates, reflecting their supportive roles within the industry: Tourism Authority, Port Agent, Hospitality Agent, or Association or Company related to the cruise industry. The website will also continue to function as a database offering useful publications and resources for the cruise industry, such as the MedCruise Statistical Report, the MedCruise Yearbook, and the recent MedCruise’s Cruise Port City Compass.

In terms of social media, MedCruise, following the significant increase in its presence and visibility in recent years, especially on platforms like LinkedIn and Instagram, will also be present on the ‘Threads’ channel. The aim is to enhance visibility and provide a dedicated space for discussions, updates, and interactions, strengthening its online presence.
