Five Port Associations Toward a Sustainable Future

During Seatrade Cruise Med in Malaga, Spain, MedCruise President Figen Ayan joined leaders from four other European port associations to discuss actions needed to support sustainable growth in the cruise industry.

The panel featured Monica Berstad of Cruise Norway, Klaus Bondam of Cruise Baltic, Simone Tommaso Maraschi of Cruise Europe, and Ian McQuade of Cruise Britain, with Roger Blum serving as moderator.

One of the key outcomes of this session was a joint statement from these five European and Mediterranean port associations, committing to sustainable growth in the cruise sector. Recognizing shared challenges, they emphasized the importance of transparency and collaboration among members, partners, and stakeholders to find innovative solutions.

Their common goal is to ensure that the cruise industry harmonizes with both urban and rural environments. These associations acknowledge concerns about overtourism in Europe and aim to develop balanced strategies that align tourism with the needs of local communities. By joining forces and collaborating with cruise lines, CLIA, and other key stakeholders, they commit to promoting a responsible approach to cruising that meets guest expectations, respects communities, protects natural heritage and fragile environments, and contributes positively to local economies.

The “State of the Mediterranean Industry” session also included the MedCruise President, bringing together top executives from the cruise industry to discuss the current market landscape, future priorities, and the vital need for collaboration on sector initiatives and innovations. The panel featured renowned speakers, including Marie-Caroline Laurent, Chris Theofilides, and Mario Zanetti, moderated by Mary Bond.
