Port of Funchal: A Phase of Strong Growth
The Port of Funchal is experiencing a phase of strong growth, with an increasing number of cruise ships choosing this port both as a base for supply operations and for overnight stays.
This trend aligns with the expectations of the Madeira Port Administration (APRAM, S.A.), which anticipates reaching 73 overnight stays by the end of the year. Last year, the final two months recorded 14 overnight stays, and by the first week of December this year, that number had already been matched, with a total of 34 overnight stays expected by December 31st.
Supply operations at the port are also showing significant growth. In 2023, the cruise terminal handled 42 supply operations involving 139 containers, with a substantial increase in 2024, already reaching 57 operations and a total of 203 containers handled. These operations not only generate additional revenue for the port but also have a positive impact on the local economy, involving a wide network of regional suppliers. The choice of major companies such as AIDA, TUI, P&O, and Marella to refuel at the Port of Funchal is a sign of the port’s competitiveness as a cruise destination and the quality of its infrastructure and human resources.
Overnight stays, in particular, offer numerous benefits, with around 80% of passengers and crew members exploring the city at night, significantly contributing to the local economy, especially in the restaurant, retail, and cultural and leisure sectors. These longer stays strengthen the bond between the port and the community, fostering a deeper connection with the city.
As Paula Cabaço emphasized, all of this is achieved with a strong focus on sustainability. The goal is to make these operations increasingly sustainable, not only for the port but also for the city and the cruise companies, which share environmental concerns.
The port infrastructure and APRAM’s resources are well-equipped to meet these growing demands. Furthermore, APRAM plans to intensify its promotional efforts for Madeira as a cruise destination, highlighting its accessibility and local attractions. The proximity between the port and the city is a key factor in encouraging cruise lines to extend their stays in Funchal, allowing passengers to enjoy the city at night as well.
The international recognition of the Port of Funchal as the “Best Sustainable Cruise Terminal in the World” at the World Cruise Awards, and the title of “Europe’s Best Cruise Destination” won in 2022 and 2023, are proof of continuous growth and innovation. With 279 cruise calls and over 624,000 disembarked passengers in 2023, Madeira is solidifying its position as a leading cruise destination, with a direct economic impact of over 53 million euros on the regional economy. These figures are expected to be surpassed this year, reflecting an ever-expanding market.
