Havila Voyages: Among TIME’s World’s Greatest Places

As every year, TIME highlights 100 extraordinary destinations to visit and stay in. This year, Havila Pollux and Havila Polaris, ships of the coastal cruise company Havila Voyages, have been chosen among the most beautiful places in the world.

To compile this list, TIME relies on its international network of correspondents and contributors, along with a nomination process, asking them to indicate places, including hotels, cruises, restaurants, attractions, museums, and parks that offer new experiences.

The two new ships of Havila Voyages, which debuted in August 2023, embody these requirements by offering guests more options to explore, learn, and enjoy Norway in a sustainable way.

Havila Voyages, according to TIME, is a coastal cruise company breaking the mold of sustainable marine technology with its fleet of four plug-in hybrid cruise ships, including Havila Polaris and Havila Pollux, launched in 2023. In addition to cutting-edge technology and design, they were chosen for the uniqueness of their Norwegian cuisine and the experiences offered, along with a forward-thinking mentality with plans for zero-carbon operations by 2028 and the adoption of emission-free fuel alternatives like hydrogen by 2030.

Bent Martini, CEO of Havila Voyages, expressed his gratitude for being recognized by such a prestigious publication and being included in an exclusive list of the “best.” He highlighted how the team works hard to create a dynamic and unique mix of culinary, immersive, and rich Nordic cultural experiences that include eco-innovative technology, adding that this recognition was achieved thanks to the dedication of the staff in exceeding expectations and the Tour Operator partners who share the goal of offering travelers a sustainable way to explore the Norwegian coast.

Havila Voyages operates coastal cruises between Bergen and Kirkenes, and its ships are equipped with one of the largest battery packs ever installed on passenger ships. They can sail for up to four hours without noise or emissions, and the batteries are then charged with clean hydropower onshore. Additionally, the hull is specially designed for maximum energy efficiency, and excess heat from the cooling water and sea is used for heating onboard.
