HX and Ocean Bottle Join Forces Against Pollution

Hurtigruten Expeditions has announced a partnership with Ocean Bottle, a brand of reusable water bottles with a social impact revolutionizing ocean-bound plastic, to combat marine plastic pollution.

Launched ahead of World Oceans Day on June 8th, the initiative will provide complimentary Ocean Bottles to all Hurtigruten Expeditions guests, which fund the collection of ocean-bound plastic. This marks a significant step forward in HX’s ongoing commitment to becoming the world’s most sustainable expedition company, building on its historic decision to become the first cruise line to ban single-use plastics globally.

HX’s commitment to ocean conservation also includes regular beach clean-ups and support for critical research through its science and education program. With its fleet of cutting-edge expedition ships, HX plays a crucial role in reaching remote regions to gather vital scientific data—from understanding whale migrations and phytoplankton communities to cloud and aurora borealis observations. Onboard scientific and educational teams, along with guests, collect and analyze valuable data to support global research efforts.

The collaboration with Ocean Bottle also introduces innovations to HX’s Ambassador loyalty program of 1893, where Level 1 members can redeem a 10% discount and Level 2 members can receive a 20% discount when making purchases on the Ocean Bottle website.

Stefan Engl, VP Hotel Operations, expressed great enthusiasm for this partnership, emphasizing how the company recognizes the urgent need to protect oceans and combat plastic pollution in marine environments. Through the partnership with Ocean Bottle, waste is reduced, and efforts to conserve and clean oceans are supported, amplifying the impact of these actions.

For years, Ocean Bottle has been reshaping the course of ocean-bound plastic. Those who collect plastic can exchange it for money and have access to social resources such as healthcare, education, and financial security. To date, Ocean Bottle has collected 14,164,500 kilograms of plastic, equivalent to the weight of 1 billion plastic bottles, through partnerships with grassroots organizations in coastal communities of countries like Indonesia, India, and Ghana. Will Pearson, co-founder and CEO of Ocean Bottle, expressed pride in undertaking this collaboration with a leader in the cruise expedition sector known for innovations such as the ban on single-use plastics and the launch of the first battery-hybrid cruise ship. Pearson added that Hurtigruten Expeditions, through this collaboration, strongly affirms its commitment to environmental protection by preventing the equivalent of 44,604,000 plastic bottles from entering oceans.

HX has also published its 2023 ESG Report, highlighting its commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible business practices. The results show significant strides in waste reduction, including a 30% reduction in waste per guest (22% in food waste per guest) and a 16% reduction in water consumption, all while continuing to work towards a goal of reusing and recycling 100% of all waste streams by 2030.
