Sea Cloud: extensive refurbishment starting fall 2025

Sea Cloud Cruises, one of the leading luxury cruise companies, has announced that Sea Cloud, their legendary flagship vessel, will undergo a significant refurbishment starting in fall 2025.

This decision coincides with the ship’s 95th birthday, originally commissioned by Marjorie Merriweather Post and E.F. Hutton. According to Daniel Schäfer, CEO of Sea Cloud Cruises, Sea Cloud will sail through the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Canary Islands, and Atlantic during the 2025 season before docking for the extensive refurbishment. Guests sailing on Sea Cloud and her sister ships, Sea Cloud II and Sea Cloud Spirit, can enjoy special onboard and onshore events throughout the 2025 season to celebrate the ship’s history.

The refurbishment project will be overseen by Adam Pazdzioch, Managing Director and Chief Technical Officer of Sea Cloud Cruises, who has extensive experience including overseeing the construction of other ships in the fleet like Sea Cloud II and Sea Cloud Spirit. Pazdzioch expressed the honor of preserving and preparing Sea Cloud for its future beyond its centennial.

Sea Cloud’s history dates back to 1931 when Wall Street broker Edward Francis Hutton commissioned the construction of the yacht Hussar, elegantly furnished by his ex-wife Marjorie Merriweather Post. After their divorce in 1935, Marjorie repainted and renamed the ship Sea Cloud, using it as a diplomatic yacht during her husband Joseph E. Davies‘ tenure as U.S. Ambassador to Moscow and Belgium. During World War II, Sea Cloud served as a floating weather station for the U.S. Coast Guard before being sold and changing owners several times. Following a major restoration in 1979, she resumed sailing under her original name. Today, Sea Cloud continues to inspire and offer exclusive cruise experiences alongside Sea Cloud II and Sea Cloud Spirit, modern embodiments of her historic tradition.

Sea Cloud’s charm and history are intertwined with a series of renovations and adaptations over the years, always preserving her timeless elegance. Since her last major refurbishment in 2011, Sea Cloud not only meets modern maritime safety standards but also continues to enchant travelers with her refined beauty.

The announcement of Sea Cloud’s refurbishment marks an exciting chapter in the history of this maritime icon, promising to uphold its legacy for future generations of sea explorers.
