Beachcomber: Awarded at the Sustainability Awards
The 2024 Marie Claire Sustainability Awards recognized Beachcomber Resorts & Hotels’ strong commitment to environmental and social sustainability across all its resorts, awarding the company the Highly Commended position in the Global Hotel Group category.
The pioneering Mauritian hotel company opened its first property, Park Hotel, in 1952. Today, with eight beach resorts and a ninth on the way, Beachcomber Resorts & Hotels has become one of the island’s most influential hotel groups.
This award acknowledges the importance Beachcomber places on caring for the local environment and supporting community-driven initiatives, ensuring a positive and lasting legacy for Mauritius. It also celebrates the exceptional contribution to sustainable hospitality that results in a positive environmental impact, helping mitigate the effects of climate change.
Driven by the need to protect the planet and committed to reducing its carbon footprint, Beachcomber has implemented 52 measures aimed at contributing to a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable world. These measures include efficient water usage, the use of renewable energy (solar panels on hotel roofs), responsible waste management, sustainable sourcing of products, and guest involvement in these initiatives.
For over 25 years, Beachcomber’s mission has been to preserve and develop the environment and communities where its resorts are located, while promoting inclusive development. These achievements have earned the Group the prestigious EarthCheck Gold certification, the world’s leading environmental and social certification.
Each Beachcomber resort has an environmental and social policy with a Green Team Committee dedicated to evaluating, measuring, and monitoring all activities to fully comply with environmental laws and regulations in the Company’s areas of focus (energy, water, waste management, and biodiversity).
The action plan is clearly defined: new recruits are trained on sustainable development, hotel staff are constantly updated on ecological responsibility, and guests are kept informed of the 52 measures taken by Beachcomber and encouraged to participate.
On the social level, the company supports and funds various NGOs dedicated to community development projects, strengthening Mauritian craftsmanship through the Beautiful Localhands organization, and promoting the employability of vulnerable youth through the Projet Employabilité Jeunes (PEJ). This ensures that something is given back to the communities surrounding its resorts and hotels by supporting the local population, artisans, and industries, thereby fostering a strong sense of community and social responsibility!
