Le Commandant Charcot: winter 2022-23 in Antarctica


PONANT unveils a new travelling offer to the edge of the world for the winter of 2022-2023, in the heart of the Antarctic continent with Le Commandant Charcot, the first highly polar exploration ship.

The White Continent always sparks curiosity and PONANT is inviting travellers in search of powerful experiences to set sail for new explorations. A polar expert for more than 20 years, PONANT combines its experience in ice navigation with the passion of its naturalist guides for genuinely immersive experiences.

Le Commandant Charcot offers many new activities: participatory science, kayaking, hiking or snowshoeing, polar diving without a wetsuit, polar swimming with a wetsuit. More than 20 nature guides will supervise these activities and accompany you to meet a rich and fascinating wildlife on zodiac or hovercraft trips.

PONANT, for its second season in Antarctica with Le Commandant Charcot is offering two new itineraries for an unforgettable semi-circumnavigation of Antarctica.

Expedition “Unexplored Antarctica between Two Continents”.

For an exploration voyage that will take you from the southern tip of the American continent to New Zealand. This itinerary will explore the Bellingshausen, Amundsen and de Ross Seas, the world’s largest marine reserve, on a 30-day, 28-night cruise from 15 January to 13 February 2023.

Expedition “From Dumont d’Urville to Mawson: retracing Heroic Age expeditions”.

From the coasts of New Zealand to those of Ushuaia, the city at the end of the world, PONANT offers for this unique polar odyssey an unprecedented semi-circumnavigation of the Antarctic, discovering Adélie Land, Victoria Land and Marie Byrd Land, as well as Macquarie Island, an Australian sub-Antarctic island classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its extraordinary biodiversity. A unique exploratory voyage into the heart of French and Australian polar adventure history, with a 28-day, 26-night cruise from 13 February to 12 March 2023.

Le Commandant Charcot will be the first highly polar exploration vessel powered by LNG (liquefied natural gas), a major innovation that strongly marks PONANT’s commitment to sustainable tourism with minimal environmental impact. Polar class PC2, this eco-designed boat with the latest green technologies symbolizes the culmination of PONANT’s efforts to reduce its impact.

Le Commandant Charcot will set sail to discover Antarctica from winter 2021-2022.  Ten exceptional cruises are offered this inaugural season from November 2021 to March 2022, including six different itineraries.
