Riverside: Luxury Cruises along the Main River

The Main is one of Europe’s most famous rivers, connecting the Rhine with the Danube, the North Sea with the Black Sea, and it is the longest tributary of the Rhine. Along its course, with Riverside, you can admire culturally rich cities and fascinating landscapes aboard a luxury river vessel.

Sailing along the Main from Bamberg to Grabfeld Gau, you can enjoy landscapes characterized by a series of vineyards, asparagus fields, and orchards, as well as discover cities like Schweinfurt with the Leopoldina, the oldest scientific academy in Europe, Frankfurt, or Bayreuth. Riverside offers a variety of itineraries, differing in length and the cities visited. Cruises range from 4 to 21 days and also navigate the Danube, Moselle, and Rhine rivers.

Highlights of these itineraries include famous cities such as Frankfurt, which immediately brings to mind Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who was born in the house on Großer Hirschgraben. Here, you can visit his birthplace, the historic center with the Paulskirche, which became the seat of the first German National Assembly in 1848 and where the Frankfurt Peace Prize of the German Book Trade is awarded every year, and much more. Wertheim, where you must try the “Buddescheißer,” a famous mix of pomace and peach liquor from the wine city of Wertheim. A visit to the historic center and Wertheim Castle, which dominates the old town with its imposing towers, is a must. Würzburg is home to one of Europe’s most important castles, designed by Balthasar Neumann, the Residenz, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this baroque city, you can also visit and walk across the oldest bridge over the Main and the Marienburg Fortress, which served as the residence of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg for over 400 years.

Other majestic cities you can visit along these mighty rivers include: Miltenberg, nestled between the Spessart and Odenwald hills, one of the most beautiful villages in Bavaria. The square is characterized by a medieval structure, at the end of which a path leads through the city wall’s tower to Mildenburg; Bamberg, rich in museums and historical monuments such as the Alte Hofhaltung, once a bishop’s residence, the cathedral dating back to 1002, and the Neue Residenz. Bamberg is also an ideal spot for beer enthusiasts due to its numerous breweries and pubs. What’s more, Bamberg is home to Lock 100, the last lock on the Ludwig Main-Danube Canal built under King Ludwig I, which is still operated by hand.

Finally, a cruise on the Main allows you to visit Nuremberg, famous for its handcrafted souvenir shops, and where you can visit Albrecht Dürer’s house, admire the historic center with the Kaiserburg, and explore the medieval fortress’s churches and walls, as well as the “Marriage Carousel,” a fountain with bronze figures that depict married life, and much more.

What truly distinguishes these journeys is the luxury service provided by Riverside, aboard elegant ships that offer guests every comfort to make their cruise unique.
