Royal Caribbean: from Venice to Ravenna in 2021

Royal Caribbean International recently informed passengers with reservations for cruises departing from Venice in the summer of 2021 that their new home port will be Ravenna, a city about 140km from Venice. In summer 2021, the Rhapsody of the Seas is the ship that will welcome guests in Ravenna instead of Venice for their Royal Caribbean Mediterranean cruises.

“Given the growing worries regarding the future of cruising to and from Venice, Italy, in the future the Rhapsody of the Seas will sail from our new home port of Ravenna, Italy – a city located just two hours south of Venice,” is what was written in a communication to passengers. “Understanding how much time and energy is necessary to plan our vacations, we have made this decision now to minimize the impact and to avoid last minute changes to your future cruise.”

There were many motivating factors that played a part in the decision. From the impact of MSC Opera on the River Countess, to the recent high water phenomena, to the constant debate on the transit of large ships in the lagoon.

To help with the inconvenience created, Royal Caribbean Cruises has already announced free transfers from the Venice Marco Polo airport to the Ravenna Port and vice versa. If the transfers are as convenient as expected, passengers will simply have a new opportunity to visit the beautiful Ravenna and thus expand their knowledge of the Italian Adriatic coast.
