Silversea: Antarctica photographed by Steve mccurry

The photographer Steve McCurry has photographed Antarctica for the first time in his career, traveling on board the Silver Cloud operated by  Silversea during a 10 day cruise that departed on December 10, 2019.

McCurry went through the Drake Passage to capture enchanting images of the Antarctic Sound, of the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. His spectacular images reflect the completely natural and unique beauty of the Antarctic, the enchanting wild life of the region and the unforgettable experiences that the area offers.

“The Antarctic is different from any other destination in the world. I felt like I was on another planet,” said McCurry. Among the most important moments of the trip, McCurry mentions the memorable close encounters with whales and sea elephants who voluntarily came close to the photographer. One of the most significant moments for McCurry was the opportunity to travel and collaborate with the Silversea experts who enriched his experience with their incredible knowledge. The photographer participated in topical lessons held in the Explorer Lounge onboard the Silver Cloud, lead by the Silversea Expedition Team. He then went onshore on one of the ship’s 18 Zodiac boats in order to personally discover the natural and enchanting beauty of the Antarctic.

Barbara Muckermann, Chief Marketing Officer of Silversea, maintains that McCurry was the perfect visual narrator to capture the authentic beauty of the Antarctic, adding that the photographer truly rose to the challenge. In fact, on board the Silver Cloud, Steve went in search of rare and authentic moments, capturing images that reflect the unique experiences that the Expedition Team offers to cruise guests.

Steve McCurry traveled to Antarctica on board the Silver Cloud in a very high level of comfort, enjoying an ocean view suite and all-inclusive services, including: a luxurious cuisine in four elegant restaurants, 24-hour room service, the personalized service of a steward, wine and premium alcoholic drinks included, specialty coffees, bottled water, fruit juice and non-alcoholic beverages served in the entire ship, an in-room bar stocked with preferred beverages and free Wi-Fi. In addition to a fleet of 18 Zodiac boats, the Silver Cloud has 10 kayaks to allow guests to explore destinations by water at their own pace.

The Silversea recently created Polar voyages by launching the Antarctic Bridge, the first super luxury fly-cruise combination in the world to the white continent. With a direct flight from Punta Arenas, Chile, to King George Island in the Antarctic, starting December 2021, travelers will fly for 670 marine miles through the Drake Passage on a private airplane reserved exclusively for Silversea guests, and especially equipped to be able to land on King George Island.

An entertainment program will be shown on the flights which includes a briefing about the Zodiac boats and IAATA, and has been specifically designed for the expeditions to Antarctica in order to prepare guests for the unique adventure that awaits them. The travelers will spend 5 full days traveling immersed in the enchanting destination, accompanied by the Silversea Expedition Experts Team.

In the next season in the Antarctic, three Silversea ships will offer unforgettable experiences in the Antarctic starting from October 28, 2020, including the Silver Wind, recently converted to polar class, the Silver Explorer, that will travel toward the Ross Sea in an unrepeatable trip, and the Silver Cloud.
