Costa Cruises: The Christening of the Costa Toscana
Last week, on 16 June, the christening of the Costa Toscana, Costa Cruises‘ new flagship, took place in the port of Barcelona with a day full of festivities!
The day began with a conference at the Poltrona Frau Arena, where the Costa Toscana’s patroness, Chanel Terrero, a Spanish singer who took part in the Eurovision Song contest in Turin, was presented. Angel León also took part in the conference to present a new project in collaboration with Costa, and Adam D. Tihany, who was responsible for the creative design of Costa Toscana’s interiors.
Right after the conference, there was a meeting with the Michelin-starred chef Ángel León, in which we sampled a dish with the ‘cereal of the sea‘, part of the new project in collaboration with Costa Cruises and the Costa Cruises Foundation.
After a delicious lunch at the l’Oliveto Restaurant, the christening ceremony began in the afternoon, at the Colosseo but also live in the theatre and on all the screens on the ship.
The ceremony which was emotional and engaging, was conducted by Carlos Sobera and Flora Gonzalez, well-known stars of Spanish television and loved by the general public.
Also present was Mario Zanetti, Costa Cruises’ president, who said during the conference “It is very exciting to celebrate the christening of our Costa Toscana in Barcelona, a city where we are very attached to and where we have felt at home since the beginning of our history. For this occasion, we have organised an event to celebrate the start of a summer that marks the carefree resumption of travelling and holidays, and which represents the excellence of Costa’s offer in all its aspects, from haute cuisine, to high quality entertainment, to unique experiences ashore.”
After the speeches of the various guests and the blessing of the ship, the godmother, Chanel Terrero, together with the captain, Pietro Sinisi, took the stage for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, which involved breaking the bottle on the ship’s prow, as maritime tradition dictates.
Closing the ceremony for the Costa Toscana was Andrea Casta, a ‘globtrotter’ violinist who performed around the world with his electric violin with a luminous bow.
Afterwards, the party moved to the outside decks, to Piazza del Campo, where an aperitif was served by Angel León, accompanied by lots of bubbles and music, and then concluded with the ‘Molecule Show‘, a show of great visual effect, with a cluster of three hundred helium-inflated spheres flying in the sky over the beautiful Barcelona skyline, elevating an acrobat on a trapeze into an ethereal, magical and floating dimension.
After bidding farewell to Barcelona late in the evening, there was a gala dinner, also organised by chef Angel León known as the ‘chef of the sea’ who has been awarded 3 Michelin stars with his restaurant Aponiente, and who has been a Costa Cruises partner for the past year, together with Bruno Barbieri and Hélène Darroze.
Finally, there was a mega party in Piazza del Campo to conclude the day of celebrations for Costa Toscana. An exclusive DJ Set by Meduza, the most famous trio of house music producers in the world, who have topped the charts establishing themselves as the biggest Italian group ever in terms of streaming, accompanied the ship’s sailing from Barcelona to Valencia.
“Costa Toscana represents the art of experiencing the sea, but also the art of enjoying, protecting and loving the sea.”
