Cunard: The Restorative Power of Ocean Voyages
For over 180 years, Cunard has championed the idea that ocean voyages can have a restorative effect on both mind and body.
A recent groundbreaking study conducted aboard the company’s flagship, the Queen Mary 2, has demonstrated that spending five days at sea can significantly enhance various cognitive abilities, including memory, logical reasoning, perception, and problem-solving. This research confirms that Cunard’s renowned transatlantic crossing is not just a travel experience but also an opportunity to improve mental and emotional well-being.
The study, carried out by the Human Understanding Agency and Walnut, involved 40 guests from different parts of the world, all participating in the transatlantic voyage from Southampton to New York. Using advanced biometric tools, researchers analyzed the cognitive and physiological changes in participants before and after five days at sea. The results were extraordinary, revealing increased cognitive performance and overall well-being.
The main findings of the study include: Memory, with a 29% increase in word recall ability, indicating an improvement in short-term memory; Problem-solving, with a 125% increase in performance on logical and spatial reasoning tasks; Attention, with a 14% improvement in focus during visual tasks; and Relaxation, where self-perceived relaxation levels increased by 158%, while overall physiological stress decreased by 35%.
Neuroscientist Dr. Jack Lewis highlighted how the study’s results demonstrate the tangible stress-reducing effects of sea travel. He explained that lower cortisol levels, the stress hormone, contribute to significant improvements in both memory and logical reasoning. Furthermore, he noted that the wide array of stimulating activities offered aboard the Queen Mary 2 enables passengers to optimize their cognitive potential.
In addition to cognitive benefits, Cunard offers guests a unique experience combining relaxation and personal enrichment. Lectures by world-renowned experts, part of the Cunard Insights program, personalized wellness treatments, and cultural entertainment opportunities create the perfect environment for mental and emotional renewal. Katie McAlister, President of Cunard, emphasized that the study reinforces a belief long held by the company: a voyage with Cunard is much more than just a vacation. She highlighted how the enrichment programs, personalized wellness experiences, exceptional cuisine, and renowned service provide guests with an experience that inspires, rejuvenates, and prepares them to face the world with a renewed perspective.
