Havila Castor from Bergen on her maiden voyage
Havila Voyages‘ new ship, Havila Castor, is the most environmentally friendly passenger ship in the world and will sail the classic coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes. On Thursday morning, May 5, the ship docked in Bergen for the first time after a long voyage from the Tersan shipyard in Turkey.
Havila Castor features an energy efficient hull design designed to suit the diverse weather conditions on the Norwegian coast. The ship will be able to travel emission-free for up to 4 hours.
“Our ships are the most environmentally friendly passenger ships to ever sail the classic coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes and from June the Havila Castor will be the first ship to enter the Geirangerfjord World Heritage site quietly and without emissions,” says the CEO Martini.
The ship is powered by a combination of natural gas and batteries, which reduces CO2 emissions by up to 30% and NOX emissions by 90%.
The Havila Castor is also designed for climate-neutral fuel alternatives such as hydrogen and ammonia. With today’s technology, the gradual addition of biogas will further reduce CO2 emissions.
The onboard menu will change during the voyage and reflect the areas in which Havila Castor will sail. “Our goal is to reduce food waste on board. We have a completely unique food concept, which is why there will be no buffet,” says Martini.
Havila Castor after the final preparations will leave for her first tour from Bergen on Tuesday 10 May at 20.30. During the round trip, Havila Castor will call at 34 ports along the Norwegian coast in 11 days.
