Launched in Monfalcone Mein Schiff Relax
Mein Schiff Relax, the first of two innovative dual-fuel cruise ships (Liquid Natural Gas – LNG and Marine Gas Oil – MGO) in TUI Cruises‘ new inTUItion class, was christened at the Fincantieri shipyard in Monfalcone by Elena Sperti, a shipyard employee.
TUI Cruises boasts one of the most environmentally advanced fleets, and these new units, weighing approximately 160,000 gross tons, will form the backbone of TUI’s future fleet. They result from a prototype project developed by Fincantieri that emphasizes the company’s modern and sustainable characteristics. The project focuses on energy efficiency, aiming to reduce operational consumption and minimize environmental impact in line with the latest regulations. The ships will utilize LNG propulsion, the cleanest marine fuel widely available, and are “future-proof” with the ability to use low-emission fuels like bio-LNG or e-LNG, marking a significant step towards climate-neutral cruises.
Additionally, the ships will ensure nearly emission-free operation while in port (about 40% of operational time) through catalytic converters (compliant with Euro 6 standards) and a generative turbine using residual heat from diesel generators and shore power. Furthermore, the vessels will feature an innovative waste treatment system, even more efficient, transforming organic substances into charcoal through a thermal process.
