Northern Xplorer: a zero-emission luxury project

Norway’s newly formed cruise line, Northern Xplorer, launches plans to build a luxury zero-emission cruise ship, entering into partnership with Portuguese shipyard West Sea Viana.

The delivery of Northern Xplorer‘s new ship is scheduled for the start of the 2025/2026 cruise season. Behind this innovative project we find Sandvik, a man who, together with a company from Western Norway, The Fjords, built hybrid electric tourist ships in 2016 and 2018.

Cruise ships born at the Viana Do Costello shipyard include the 200-passenger World Navigator (2021), World Voyager (2020) and World Explorer (2019), the first three in a series of seven ships commissioned by Atlas Ocean Voyages.

The Northern Xplorer jewel, which can accommodate up to 250 passengers, will be equipped with an all-electric propulsion system, which will allow it to sail without emissions. Initially this stunning ship will ply the seas of the Norwegian Fjords and then aim for other destinations as the infrastructure is equipped for this technology.

There is a growing desire on the part of several cruise lines to build smaller, ultra-luxurious ships with very little, if any, impact on the environment.

We just have to see the end result of this great project and wait until we can get on board to test what the charter reads in person!
