Silversea: construction begins on Silver Ray

Silversea Cruises officially began construction of Silver Ray, the second ship in the Nova class, with a traditional steel cutting ceremony today at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.

Silver Ray will join Silversea‘s fleet in the summer of 2024, while Silver Nova, due to the global situation, will depart on her maiden voyage in August 2023, contrary to schedule.

Silversea‘s Nova-class ships are set to become the world’s first low-emission cruise ships with advanced hybrid technology using fuel cells, batteries and dual-fuel engines using liquefied natural gas, emitting zero local emissions while in port.
They will also have a horizontal layout and innovative asymmetrical design, with public spaces and suites spanning the entire length of each ship.

“We are proud to have begun building Silver Ray in partnership with Meyer Werft as we continue to push the boundaries in sustainable cruise travel,” says Roberto Martinoli, President and CEO of Silversea Cruises. “Silversea has long been at the forefront of innovation when it comes to environmentally friendly cruising. The launch of the Nova class represents a huge leap forward in this regard and we are introducing pioneering technologies. Given the global issues that have affected the construction of Silver Nova, it has been decided to change her launch date by approximately one month in order to maintain the level of experience our discerning guests have come to expect when travelling with Silversea.
