Silversea: Laying the keel of Silver Ray

Silversea Cruises and MEYER WERFT celebrated the keel laying of Silver Ray at the Papenburg shipyard in Germany, a centuries-old shipbuilding tradition that marks the beginning of a ship’s construction.

Silver Ray, the second ship in Silversea’s Nova class, is expected to enter service in the summer of 2024, joining its sister ship, Silver Nova, as one of the most sustainable ships in its class.

Barbara Muckermann, President and CEO of Silversea, and Jan Meyer, CEO of MEYER WERFT, placed the commemorative coin underneath a pre-assembled module weighing 230 tons and measuring approximately 47 meters by 8 meters as a symbol of good luck, and then celebrated this important milestone with the participants with a toast.

“We are delighted to welcome select members of our valued business community to the MEYER WERFT shipyard in Papenburg to witness this milestone in the construction of Silver Ray, one of the first times Travel Advisors will be able to witness the keel-laying of an ultra-luxury ship”, said Barbara Muckermann, President and CEO of Silversea Cruises.

Prior to Silver Ray’s official keel-laying ceremony, guests were treated to a tour of Silver Nova, which is nearing completion at MEYER WERFT and will join Silversea’s fleet this summer.

Both Nova-class ships will feature an innovative asymmetrical design and horizontal layout, with public spaces and suites spanning the entire length of each ship, enriching guests’ journeys with an unprecedented openness to the destination.
