Silversea: Naming Ceremony for the Silver Ray
Silver Ray, the second ultra-luxury ship in the Nova Class, has been officially named by its godmother, Dr. María Josefina Olascoaga, in Lisbon. This ship is part of one of Silversea’s most energy-efficient and spacious ship
The event has been special even because it’s marking a significant moment in its 30th anniversary year, a testament to its leadership in ultra-luxury and expedition cruising.
During the ceremony, Jason Liberty, president and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, and Bert Hernandez, in his first naming as Silversea’s president, addressed the guests. Dr. Josefina Olascoaga, an ocean scientist, and Captain Alessandro Zanello, who will command Silver Ray, formally named the ship, followed by the traditional champagne bottle break on the hull. The event featured a bagpipe performance, live dances, and the national anthems of the U.S. and Portugal.
“Welcoming Silver Ray to our global fleet represents Royal Caribbean Group’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the Silversea brand and delivering exceptional experiences in ultra-luxury and expedition travel,” said Jason Liberty. “It is fitting to celebrate Silver Ray’s naming in the same year Silversea marks 30 years of excellence,” said Bert Hernandez. “I am grateful to all involved, especially Captain Zanello and his crew, and I warmly welcome Dr. María Josefina Olascoaga as Silver Ray’s Godmother.”
Dr. María Josefina Olascoaga, an ocean scientist and professor at the University of Miami, co-leads OceanScope, a program equipping Royal Caribbean Group ships with instruments to monitor ocean conditions. Her research on ocean currents makes her a fitting godmother for this innovative ship.
Silver Ray doubles the availability of this innovative and revolutionary class of ships, thereby expanding the range of itineraries and consolidating the innovations introduced by the Nova Class, from the development of the Salt projects to energy efficiency and the incredible onboard architecture based on the unconventional concept of asymmetry.
Strengthening Royal Caribbean Group’s dedication to top-tier ultra-luxury and expedition cruising, Silversea’s Nova Class ships introduce a fresh approach to sea travel with asymmetrical designs and 4,000m2 of exterior glass. Silver Ray, joining her sister ship Silver Nova, is among the most energy-efficient luxury cruise ships built, marking a milestone towards Royal Caribbean Group’s net-zero emissions goal. Silver Ray will embark on her maiden voyage from Lisbon on June 15, spending her inaugural season in the Mediterranean before heading to the Americas in December 2024.
