A Journey Aboard the Celebrity Edge Exploring Alaska

Setting sail from the vibrant city of Seattle was the perfect beginning for my Alaskan cruise on the Celebrity Edge. The iconic skyline, with the majestic Mount Rainier in the background, provided a stunning send-off. The excitement of embarking from this Pacific Northwest gem was palpable, setting the stage for an unforgettable journey through the breath-taking landscapes of Alaska.

One of the highlights of my cruise was the incredible dining options aboard the Celebrity Edge. The ship offers a diverse array of restaurants, each delivering a unique gastronomic experience. I was particularly impressed by the four main dining restaurants included in the cruise package: the Cosmopolitan Restaurant, a modern American restaurant, quickly became a favourite. The ever-evolving menu kept things fresh and exciting, and I loved how traditional favourites were given a contemporary twist. The Normandie Restaurant, dining here felt like being transported to a Parisian bistro. The elegant atmosphere paired perfectly with classic French dishes like delicate soufflés and rich coq au vin. The Cyprus Restaurant, the flavours of the Mediterranean came alive at Cyprus. The emphasis on fresh seafood and regional specialties, along with the serene coastal-inspired ambiance, made every meal a delightful experience and finally the Tuscan Restaurant, Indulging in the hearty, rustic flavours of Italy at Tuscan was a treat. The homemade pastas, wood-fired pizzas, and impressive selection of Italian wines captured the essence of Italian dining beautifully.

Entertainment on the Celebrity Edge exceeded all my expectations. The ship’s theatre was a marvel, hosting Broadway-style shows, live music performances, and even aerial acrobatics. Each night brought a new spectacle, ensuring that I was never bored. The Club offered a more intimate atmosphere with immersive performances, interactive games, and late-night parties that kept the energy high.

Exploring the various bars and lounges on board was a delight. Each venue had its own unique ambiance and specialty offerings. The Martini Bar, centrally located, was a highlight with its chic atmosphere and skilled bartenders who entertained with their cocktail-making prowess. Whether enjoying a classic martini or a creative new concoction, it was always a memorable experience. Eden Bar nestled within the lush, multi-level Eden space, this bar offered an eclectic mix of craft cocktails. The tranquil, garden-like setting made it a perfect spot to unwind. The Sunset Bar provided stunning views and a relaxed vibe. It was my go-to spot for enjoying a cocktail while watching the sunset over the ocean.

My accommodations on Deck 6 were nothing short of spectacular. The Panoramic Ocean View stateroom offered floor-to-ceiling windows that provided breath-taking views of the sea and the Alaskan wilderness. Waking up to the sight of the endless ocean and the majestic glaciers and falling asleep to the gentle sound of the waves, was pure bliss. The room itself was spacious, elegantly designed, and equipped with all the modern amenities one could want.

One of the most innovative features on the Celebrity Edge is the Magic Carpet, a cantilevered platform that moves between decks. Experiencing it on Deck 16 as a stunning bar with panoramic ocean views was unforgettable. When it transformed into an al fresco extension of the restaurants on Deck 5, dining became a unique over-the-water experience that felt truly special. A true highlight of my journey was being fortunate enough to take part in a bridge tour. Meeting Captain Matt Karandreas and getting a behind-the-scenes look at the ship’s operations was fascinating. Captain Matt’s expertise and passion for sailing were evident, and his approachable demeanor made the experience even more enjoyable. Seeing the intricacies of navigation and the technology that powers this magnificent vessel was an unforgettable experience.

For relaxation and rejuvenation, the ship’s wellness facilities were top-notch. The spa offered a sanctuary of serenity with a wide range of treatments. I particularly enjoyed the SEA Thermal Suite, a collection of therapeutic experiences that provided the perfect way to unwind. The fully equipped fitness center also had everything from state-of-the-art equipment to group fitness classes. The Celebrity Edge blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a seamless connection with the sea. The Rooftop Garden became my tranquil oasis where I could relax among lush greenery, enjoy outdoor movies, or savor garden-inspired cocktails. The Resort Deck, with its stunning pool and comfortable loungers, offered the perfect spot to soak up the sun or take a refreshing dip. The adults-only Solarium provided a peaceful retreat, complete with a pool, hot tubs, and a tranquil ambiance.

Cruising through Alaska on the Celebrity Edge was an awe-inspiring experience. The ship navigated through pristine waters, offering close-up views of glaciers, fjords, and abundant wildlife. Each port of call presented unique opportunities for exploration, from whale watching in Juneau to hiking in Ketchikan. The scenic beauty of Alaska’s rugged landscapes, coupled with the luxurious comfort of the Celebrity Edge, made this voyage truly exceptional.

Ketchikan, Alaska, often referred to as the “First City” of the state due to its location at the southern tip of the Inside Passage, offers visitors a unique glimpse into the rugged beauty and rich culture of Alaska. Stepping off the Celebrity Edge, a ship renowned for its luxury and innovation, one transitions from a world of modern comfort to the breath-taking natural and cultural wonders of Ketchikan. This juxtaposition sets the stage for an unforgettable adventure. An excursion to the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show was a highlight of Ketchikan. This lively event highlights the skills and traditions of the region’s lumberjacks, offering a blend of history and entertainment. Set in an outdoor arena, the show features professional lumberjacks competing in events such as log rolling, axe throwing, and speed climbing. This contrast underscores the unique appeal of an Alaskan adventure: the blend of modern exploration and timeless wilderness.

Early Morning Magic: A Dawes Glacier Adventure on the Celebrity Edge

Waking up at 4:30 AM on the Celebrity Edge to catch a glimpse of the Dawes Glacier is an adventure that starts in the chilly, predawn hours. When you step onto the deck, the air is biting cold, around -3 degrees Celsius, and a soft fog hangs in the air, making everything feel quiet and almost magical. Only a few other early risers are out, bundled up and savoring the peaceful start to the day. As the ship moves closer to the glacier, the sky begins to lighten, and the fog slowly lifts. By 6 AM, the crew starts making their rounds with trays of hot chocolate, offering a warm treat to fend off the cold. The hot chocolate is a welcome comfort, and it brings a sense of togetherness among the small group of early birds gathered on deck, all sharing in the excitement and the cold.

The sky continues to brighten, and soon the Dawes Glacier starts to come into view. More passengers begin to trickle out of their cabins, drawn by the promise of a spectacular sight. By 7 AM, the deck is buzzing with people, all bundled up and eager to see the glacier. The fog has lifted completely, and the morning sun casts a warm glow over everything, making the cold more bearable. Finally, the Dawes Glacier appears in full view in the distance, its towering ice walls and deep blue crevices looking stunning. The deck is now packed with people, all oohing and aahing at the sight. The glacier, reflecting in the calm waters, looks like something out of a dream. Standing there with your fellow passengers, sipping hot chocolate, and soaking in the beauty of the glacier is a moment you will not forget. The early wake-up call, the cold, and the wait are all worth it for this breath-taking view and a cherished highlight of your Alaskan adventure.

Exploring Juneau, Alaska: Unveiling the Wonders of the Capital City

The next stop was in Juneau, the capital city of Alaska, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, rich history, and cultural experiences. Disembarking from the luxurious Celebrity Edge in Juneau opens the door to a myriad of adventures, from awe-inspiring glaciers to fascinating museums and vibrant local culture. As you step off the Celebrity Edge, the picturesque landscape of Juneau unfolds before you. Nestled between the Gastineau Channel and towering mountains, Juneau is accessible only by sea or air, adding to its remote and enchanting allure.

One of the most iconic attractions in Juneau is the Mendenhall Glacier, but we also visited the Alaska State Capitol and the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. Whale watching is another highlight of a visit to Juneau and one of the newer attractions in Juneau that has quickly become a symbol of the city is the Whale Project, also known as the “Humpback Whale Statue”, a stunning bronze sculpture depicts a life-sized humpback whale breaching out of the water.

Discovering Skagway, Alaska

Skagway, Alaska, a small town with a big history, offers visitors a fascinating blend of gold rush heritage, scenic beauty, and adventurous activities. Stepping off the Celebrity Edge in Skagway is like stepping back in time to the days of the Klondike Gold Rush. As you disembark from the Celebrity Edge, the quaint charm of Skagway greets you. One of the most iconic moments in Skagway was at the Red Onion Saloon, a lively bar and restaurant that offers a glimpse into the town’s colorful past. Another Skagway staple is the Klondike Doughboy, a local bakery famous for its delicious fried bread. This traditional treat, reminiscent of the doughnuts enjoyed by prospectors, is a must-try for visitors. For a truly unforgettable experience, a ride on the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway is essential. The journey took us through tunnels, over trestle bridges, and past stunning waterfalls and glaciers.

A Day Out in Victoria, Canada from the Celebrity Edge

After a day at sea Celebrity Edge docked at the busy cruise terminal in Victoria, Canada at 5pm and I was excited to explore this charming city. I stepped off the ship and hit the vibrant streets, ready for an evening of fun and relaxation. My first stop was Fisherman’s Wharf, known for its colorful floating houses. The short walk from the cruise terminal was pleasant, passing by quaint shops and cafes. When I got to the wharf, I was greeted by a rainbow of brightly painted houses bobbing on the water. Each floating home was uniquely decorated, creating a cheerful and whimsical atmosphere. I wandered along the docks, chatting with locals and snapping photos of these charming houses.

Next, I headed to Beacon Hill Park, a green oasis in the heart of Victoria. Just a short walk from Fisherman’s Wharf, the park was a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Continuing my exploration, I visited Thunderbird Park to see the oldest totem pole in the city. The park’s peaceful atmosphere made it a perfect spot for this historical monument. The totem pole was intricately carved, telling stories of Indigenous traditions and legends. I took my time admiring the detailed carvings, each one telling a unique story. After soaking in the tranquility of Beacon Hill Park & Thunderbird Park, I made my way to the waterfront to check out the seaplane terminal. Walking along the waterfront, I also noticed the small water taxis zipping around the harbor. No trip to Canada is complete without a stop at Tim Hortons, so I found a nearby location and went in. The familiar smell of freshly brewed coffee and baked goods was welcoming. I ordered a box of Timbits, those delicious little donut holes, in various flavors. With my coffee and Timbits, I found a cozy corner to enjoy my treat and soak in the lively atmosphere.

After a few hours and seeing as much as I could, I returned to the Celebrity Edge, full of great memories. From the colorful floating houses at Fisherman’s Wharf to the peaceful serenity of Beacon Hill Park, the excitement of watching seaplanes and water taxis, and the cultural richness of Thunderbird Park, every moment had been special.

In conclusion, my Alaskan cruise aboard the Celebrity Edge was nothing short of extraordinary. From the innovative Magic Carpet to the exquisite dining options, luxurious accommodations, world-class entertainment and excursions, every moment was designed to offer unparalleled comfort, style, and adventure. Under the expert guidance of Captain Matt Karandreas, the Celebrity Edge provided a cruise experience like no other. This voyage from Seattle was truly a journey of a lifetime, filled with unforgettable memories and luxurious indulgence.
