Viking was founded in 1997 with the purchase of four ships in Russia, and in 2000, the company expanded into the American market. Since then, Viking has grown to become the leading small ship travel company, offering river, ocean, and expedition cruises on all seven continents. With an operational office in Basel, Switzerland, Viking offers destination-focused itineraries; each journey includes a shore excursion in every port and an onboard and onshore enrichment program that provides a deep immersion into the destination through music and art performances, cooking demonstrations, and informative lectures. With 250 awards to its name, the company currently operates a fleet of state-of-the-art ships that have received numerous accolades since their launch.
Viking was voted the #1 River Cruise Line in 2020 and 2021 and the #1 Ocean Cruise Line in 2021 by Condé Nast Traveller in the Readers' Choice Awards 2020. Additionally, Viking has consistently been named the #1 Ocean Cruise Line by readers of Travel + Leisure in the World's Best Awards. Viking celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2022, welcoming a second expedition ship, as well as two new ocean ships, new Viking Longships in Europe, and new ships specially built for the Nile, Mekong, and Mississippi rivers. Viking River Cruises boasts the largest fleet of river cruise ships, with vessels specially designed to navigate the world's great rivers and provide convenient daily access to a myriad of destinations and experiences. River cruises range from 8 to 23 days, with itineraries on the Rhine, Main, Danube, Seine, Rhône, Douro, Moselle, Elbe, Dordogne, Garonne, and Gironde in Europe; Volga, Neva, and Svir in Russia; the Dnieper in Ukraine; the Nile in Egypt; the Mekong in Southeast Asia, and also on the Mississippi.
